National Freshman of
the Year
Jared Sullinger,
Ohio State
Jared
Sullinger, who led
Ohio State in both
scoring (17.2 ppg.)
and rebounding (10.2
rpg.), received the
national freshman
honors. Sullinger
earned several
individual honors in
2010-11 including
first team All-Big
Ten, Big Ten
Freshman of the
Year, Big Ten
Tournament most
outstanding player
and first team
All-America honors.
He was a finalist
for the 2011 Wooden
Award and was a
Naismith
All-American. With
Sullinger leading
the way the Buckeyes
won the Big Ten
regular season crown
with a 16-2 overall
record and then won
the 2011 Big Ten
Tournament in
Indianapolis before
advancing the NCAA
Sweet 16.
Mid-Major Freshman
of the Year
Steven Roundtree,
Oral Roberts
The
Summit Leaguer
newcomer of the year
earned mid-major
freshman of the year
honors as well.
Steven Roundtree
scored in
double-figures in 22
times, and owns six
double-doubles. He
scored a career-high
27 points on Feb. 26
against IUPUI, and
twice collected 13
rebounds. He earned
Summit League player
of the week honors
on Feb. 28 after
averaging 23 points
and 12.5 rebounds in
ORU’s final two
regular season
games. He is the
highest scoring ORU
freshman since the
duo of Caleb Green
and Ken Tutt
combined to average
37.8 points during
the 2003-04 season.
He started every
game this season.
Mid-Major Defensive
Player of the Year
Ayron Hardy,
Jacksonville
The
Atlantic Sun
defensive player of
the year earned
mid-major defensive
player of the year
honors as well. A
first team
All-Conference
player, Hardy helped
the Dolphins to the
postseason again in
2011 and was a major
contributor in JU’s
win at East Carolina
in the first round
of the CIT. Hardy
concluded his career
ranked second
all-time in school
history in steals
and also finished in
the top ten in
career block shots.
A relentless
defender, Hardy
proved to be a game
changer on the
defensive end of the
floor.
National Most
Valuable Player
Jimmer Fredette,
Brigham Young
Everybody’s
All-American
averaged a
nation-leading 28.9
points while taking
the Cougars to the
Sweet 16, a 32-5
record, and a
regular season
Mountain West
Conference title. He
also shot 89.4
percent from the
free throw line and
led his team in
assists (4.3). In
2011, he was the MWC
Player of the Week
seven times and he
averaged 32.7 points
in three NCAA
Tournament games.
Fredette was the
recipient of
numerous national
Player of the Year
awards including the
prestigious Naismith
and Wooden awards.
Mid-Major Most
Valuable Player
Devon Beitzel,
Northern Colorado
Beitzel,
who averaged a NCAA
Division I
school-record 21.5
points per game this
season and ranked
12th in the country
in scoring, earned
Mid-Major Most
Valuable Player
honors. The 2011 Big
Sky Conference MVP
helped lead the
Bears to their first
NCAA Tournament
appearance in just
their fourth year of
NCAA Division I
postseason
eligibility. He led
Northern Colorado in
scoring in 26 of its
32 contests this
season and scored 25
or more points 13
times, including
putting in a
game-high 25 against
second-seed San
Diego State in the
second round of the
NCAA Tournament. |
