Santa Clara outlasts San Francisco to advance in CIT
Box Score
SAN FRANCISCO, CA -– They say beating a team for the third time
is tough, and it proved to be just a little too tough for the
Dons Tuesday night.
The Dons' season came to a spectacular end in front of a packed
house at War Memorial Gym, as the Santa Clara Broncos outpaced
USF 95-91 in the Collegeinsider.com Tournament Quarterfinals.
USF had won three straight against the Broncos, including both
meetings this season. It looked like the streak would continue
early, as the Dons came out of the gate fast, but the Broncos
answered and the teams wound up trading the lead 20 times over
the 40 minutes.
The old rivals traded runs throughout the emotionally charged
game with both boisterous student sections erupting as the
momentum shifted back and forth.
USF shot a red-hot 18-of-29 (62.1%) in the first half, including
5-of-11 (45.5%) from behind the arc. The Dons led 46-36 but
allowed a 9-0 run to end the half and took a one point lead into
the intermission, 46-45.
The Dons cooled off slightly in the second half, finishing at
36-of-68 (52.9%) while the Broncos caught fire and shot a
scorching 61.5% from the field in the second half.
Angelo Caloiaro had 12 of his team-high 21 points in the second
half, almost keeping pace with Rashad Green, who had 14 second
half points to help keep the Dons in the game. Green finished
with 19 points overall.
Cody Doolin did most of his damage in the first half and
finished with 18 points and a career-high 10 assists for his
second double-double of the year. Caloiaro led the Dons in both
scoring and rebounds, with 12 boards. Perris Blackwell also had
a solid game, with eight points and 10 rebounds.
Santa Clara's freshman guard Evan Roquemore was unstoppable down
the stretch, scoring 20 of his game-high 30 points (career best)
in the second half. Kevin Foster, who leads the nation in
3-pointers (3.7 per game), was true to form, firing up 11 from
long-distance, making just three, on his way to 27 points. The
pair combined for 33 in the second half.
The Broncos were 24-of-33 (72.7%) from the free throw line,
taking 18 more freebies than the Dons, who were just 9-of-15
(60%) for the night.
USF dominated in the paint, taking a 46-26 edge, but just
couldn't find any breathing room against a relentless Santa
Clara attack.
The Dons closed out their season with the biggest offensive
explosion since the night they opened it. Their 91 points were
the most in regulation since they put up 97 against Seattle on
opening night. The Dons also scored 96 in an overtime game
against Gonzaga in January.
Santa Clara will travel to Dallas to take on Southern Methodist
Friday, March 25 in the semifinals of the 2011 CIT.
