This year, six of the most successful Mississippi college student-athletes were formally inducted into the MC Sports Hall of Fame. The official induction took place during a celebratory banquet at the college itself. At the event the individual athletes, their families, friends, and teammates were able to come together to celebrate the students’ accomplishments.

The Importance of Celebrating Sporting Achievements

This event speaks to the wider importance of regularly celebrating sporting achievements. Not only do these celebrations help instill a sense of pride on an individual or team level, but they also have ripple effects across entire communities and within the sporting world itself.

Public celebrations like these help draw attention to the world of sports, which inevitably leads to more people becoming fans, and attending sporting events, something that keeps sports alive. Alongside this, and also able to keep the sporting world thriving, celebratory events might also introduce people to the world of sports betting, where they can place bets on the success of their favorite teams and players, and for good reason too. Many of these betting platforms offer extensive bonuses for both new and seasoned players, and many allow for the use of a variety of different payment methods, from cryptocurrency to credit card deposits.

The MC Director of Alumni and Family Engagement’s Thoughts

Jake Donald, the MC director of alumni and family engagement spoke positively of the event. He not only acknowledged the success of the six individuals but also spoke to the importance of celebrating the ‘rich history’ of Mississippi college athletics.  He then went on to express pride in all Mississippi student-athletes.

He noted that while the six student-athletes, their family, friends, and teammates would be present, it would also be a time for former inductees to reunite and welcome the opportunity to thank them, once again, for the hard work they put in during their college days.

Dr Tiffany Green gave her Thoughts

Former student-athlete, now pediatric dentist, Dr Tiffany Green was herself inducted into the hall of fame and attended the event. Green was inducted into after her considerable success in Mississippi college basketball in 2000. Before the event, Green spoke on how seeing everyone together and reconnecting with her former coaches would be the highlight of her evening.

She also spoke very fondly of her time as a student-athlete, suggesting that the friends and memories she made during her time at Mississippi College would stay with her forever. Before going on to state that she was ‘excited’ to congratulate the five new indicted athletes and celebrate their achievements with them.

The Five Other Athletes

The five other athletes inducted into the Mississippi College Hall of Fame were:

Raymond S. ”Bo” Bell II

Bell had a successful journey with the Mississippi Colleges Baseball team from 2009 and 2010. In 2009 he was awarded the title of Baseball Player of the Year and again received the same award a year later in 2010.

Jennifer Brogdon

Brogdon was a highly successful runner during her time at Mississippi College who had earned multiple awards prior to her induction into the Mississippi College Hall of Fame, including the David M. Halbrook Award and the ASC Fred Jacoby Sportsmanship Award. She took the ASC sportsmanship award an impressive three times during her time at Mississippi College and managed to set new school records in both cross country and track and field.

JB Brown Jr.

Brown had a considerably successful sporting career during his time at Mississippi College in the 70s. To begin with, he was a captain of the Mississippi College football team, but he soon moved on to baseball where he played as a pitcher and infielder. Brown now owns the very first African-American-owned automobile recovery agency in Mississippi.

Carrie Strafford

From 2008 to 2010, Strafford served as Mississippi College's women's soccer team captain. This was a successful time for her, and she was named to the Academic All-Conference Soccer Team three times as well as receiving many other All-Conference awards.

Brian Vasquez

During his time at Mississippi College, Vasquez took the award for ASC’s Offensive Freshman of the Year as well as the conference Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. Speaking on his return to MC, and the event, he stated that he hoped the hall of fame would inspire future generations to continue the hard work needed to be a successful student-athlete.
